What’s the Difference Between a Podiatrist, Chiropodist and Foot Health Practitioner?

If you’re looking for professional foot care, you’ve probably come across the terms podiatrist, chiropodist, and foot health practitioner (FHP). While these titles are sometimes used interchangeably, they are not the same, and understanding the differences can help you choose the right professional for your foot care needs.

At Torbay Footcare, our registered podiatrists provide expert assessment, diagnosis and treatment for a wide range of foot and lower limb conditions, from routine nail care to complex musculoskeletal problems.

What Is a Podiatrist?

A podiatrist is an allied health professional who has completed a university degree in podiatry and is registered with the UK’s Health and Care Professions Council (HCPC). Registration with the HCPC is a legal requirement to use the protected titles Podiatrist and Chiropodist.

Podiatrists are trained to assess, diagnose, treat and help prevent conditions affecting the feet, ankles and lower limbs. Their education includes anatomy, physiology, biomechanics, pathology, pharmacology and clinical practice, enabling them to manage both routine foot care and more complex medical conditions.

A podiatrist can provide treatment for:

  • Ingrown toenails.
  • Corns and calluses.
  • Verrucae.
  • Fungal nail infections.
  • Diabetic foot care.
  • Heel pain and plantar fasciitis.
  • Achilles tendinopathy.
  • Sports injuries.
  • Foot pain related to arthritis.
  • Nail surgery.
  • Prescription of orthotic insoles.
  • Advanced treatments such as Shockwave Therapy, Swift® Microwave Therapy and laser therapies.

Many podiatrists also work within the NHS, multidisciplinary healthcare teams and specialist clinics.

What Is a Chiropodist?

The term chiropodist is simply the traditional name for a podiatrist.

In the UK, the profession officially changed its name from chiropody to podiatry to better reflect the broader scope of practice. However, many experienced clinicians and members of the public still use the term “chiropodist.”

Importantly, both Chiropodist and Podiatrist are protected professional titles. Anyone using either title must be registered with the HCPC and meet strict standards of education, training and professional conduct.

What Is a Foot Health Practitioner (FHP)?

A Foot Health Practitioner (FHP) provides foot care services, typically focusing on routine treatments such as nail cutting, reducing hard skin and offering general foot care advice.

Unlike podiatrists, Foot Health Practitioners are not regulated by the HCPC, and the title “Foot Health Practitioner” is not legally protected. Training pathways vary considerably, ranging from short courses to more comprehensive private qualifications, and there is no single nationally regulated standard of education.

Many Foot Health Practitioners provide valuable routine foot care within the limits of their training. However, they are not qualified to diagnose or manage the full range of complex medical, biomechanical or musculoskeletal conditions that podiatrists are trained to treat.

Choosing the Right Professional

If you need help with routine nail care and have no underlying medical conditions, several healthcare professionals may be able to assist. However, if you have persistent foot pain, diabetes, circulation problems, sports injuries, recurring ingrown toenails, or require specialist treatments, it is advisable to consult an HCPC-registered podiatrist.

A podiatrist has the training to identify underlying causes, diagnose medical conditions and provide evidence-based treatment or referral when necessary.
