Recovering from a foot or ankle injury involves much more than simply waiting for the pain to settle. While treatments such as Shockwave Therapy and K-Laser Therapy can help reduce pain and encourage healing, long-term recovery depends on restoring strength, flexibility and normal movement. That’s why personalised rehabilitation is a key part of our musculoskeletal service at Torbay Footcare.
Whether you’ve been diagnosed with Achilles tendinopathy, plantar fasciitis, tibialis posterior dysfunction, peroneal tendinopathy, or another soft tissue injury, your rehabilitation programme is designed specifically for your condition and your individual needs.
Why Is Rehabilitation So Important?
Pain often changes the way we walk. To avoid discomfort, many people unknowingly alter their gait, placing extra stress on other muscles, tendons and joints. Although this may provide short-term relief, these compensatory movement patterns can delay healing and even lead to new injuries.
The aim of rehabilitation is not just to relieve your symptoms but to restore normal function. By improving strength, mobility and control, we help your body move more efficiently, reducing unnecessary strain on injured tissues and lowering the risk of future problems.
A Structured 8-Week Programme
At Torbay Footcare, we provide a structured 8-week rehabilitation programme using progressive resistance bands. Each exercise programme is tailored to your diagnosis and designed to gradually build functional strength and improve the range of motion in your joints.
Your exercises should be completed every day as prescribed by your clinician.
You will begin using the green resistance band, completing as many repetitions of each exercise as you comfortably can. Over the following two weeks, you will gradually increase the number of repetitions each day as your strength and confidence improve.
After two weeks, you’ll progress to the yellow resistance band, which provides a greater level of resistance. Again, you’ll complete your exercises daily, gradually increasing the number of repetitions over the next two weeks.
The programme continues in the same progressive way through the blue, red, and finally the black resistance band, with each stage increasing the challenge and helping your muscles, tendons and joints adapt safely.
This gradual progression allows your body to recover without overloading healing tissues, while steadily improving strength, endurance and joint stability.
Personalised to Your Condition
No two injuries are exactly the same, which is why every rehabilitation programme at Torbay Footcare is bespoke. Your exercises are carefully selected based on your diagnosis, symptoms, lifestyle and goals.
Your programme may focus on:
- Improving tendon strength.
- Restoring ankle and foot mobility.
- Increasing calf and lower limb strength.
- Enhancing balance and stability.
- Correcting abnormal movement patterns.
- Improving walking efficiency.
- Reducing compensatory gait that may be contributing to your injury.
By addressing the underlying cause of your symptoms rather than simply treating the pain, we aim to support a stronger and more sustainable recovery.
Ongoing Support Throughout Your Recovery
At the end of your eight-week programme, you’ll return for a follow-up musculoskeletal appointment. During this review, we’ll assess your progress, monitor your strength and mobility, and make any necessary adjustments to your treatment plan.
Depending on your recovery, we may recommend progressing your exercises further, returning to sport-specific activities, or combining rehabilitation with treatments such as Shockwave Therapy, K-Laser Therapy, orthotic support or footwear advice.
